Beach huts at Church Ope Cove. Is there some byelaw in Dorset that prevents beach hut owners from painting them anything other than grim-grey or bleak-brown?
High up on the cliff, top right, sits the remains of Rufus Castle, a Grade 1 listed Ancient Monument which was sold to a Mr Mark Watson in 1997 for the handsome sum of....... £1.00. Mr Watson's bright ideas for the castle's restoration (costing £250,000) have sadly come to nothing (costing £0) and English Heritage have had to step in to stop the castle collapsing over the cliff and destroying the lovely beach huts below. Now there's a thought. |
Overlooking Portland harbor is a permanent reminder that Portland and Weymouth were selected for the 2012 Olympic sailing events. Sir Charles Benedict Ainslie famously won his 4th consecutive Olympic gold medal in the Finn class here and overall Britain topped the medal table with 1 gold and 4 silvers.
